The options are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a DIY online divorce, see my recent blog\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/01\/24\/how-to-file-for-divorce-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to file for divorce in the UK<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>one of the many online businesses offering a quick\u00a0and cheap divorce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But did you know that a solicitor can do your\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/what-we-do\/divorce\" target=\"_blank\">divorce<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>for you,\u00a0often for less than you think?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>I want a quick and cheap online divorce<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Things to watch out for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are\u00a0they properly qualified?\u00a0 Don&#8217;t rely\u00a0on untrained and unqualified people<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t go so quickly that you forget to protect your share of the matrimonial finances.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0the family home, and you don&#8217;t want to miss out on pensions or the family business either. See my blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/blog\/index.php\/2018\/02\/01\/quick-divorce-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Quick divorce or safe divorce?<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have you agreed the arrangements for the children?<\/li>\n<li>Neither arrangements for the children nor matrimonial finances\u00a0are addressed in divorce proceedings. Check out your\u00a0rights with a properly qualified family lawyer. Fixed fees or pay as you go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/how-we-charge\" target=\"_blank\"><em>costs<\/em><\/a> are available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How do I know\u00a0the online\u00a0service providers\u00a0are properly qualified?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Good question. Expert legal help is important but the terminology is confusing: lawyer, solicitor, barrister, paralegal, chartered legal executive, collaborative lawyer, mediator. What does it all mean?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lawyer&#8221;\u00a0can mean solicitor, barrister,\u00a0or indeed any of the above.<\/p>\n<p>A solicitor is highly qualified and experienced and can advise you and represent you in Court. You can find a good one online\u00a0at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.resolution.org.uk\/findamember\/\" target=\"_blank\">Resolution<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>an organisation of family lawyers who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach.<\/p>\n<p>A barrister can advise you and represent you, but usually your solicitor instructs them, rather than you.<\/p>\n<p>A collaborative lawyer works with you, your partner and\u00a0their lawyer in face to face negotiations to resolve your family disputes.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/collaborative-law\" target=\"_blank\">Collaborative family law<\/a><\/em> can help you shape your own future after divorce, and avoid the heartbreak of Court proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>A mediator can help you and your partner work things out together. They can\u00a0help you identify the issues between you and help you resolve them. Find a good one at\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.resolution.org.uk\/findamember\/\" target=\"_blank\">Resolution<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A chartered legal executive is similar to a solicitor but tends to have trained in only one area of the law, and must be supervised.\u00a0Find a chartered legal executive on the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cilex.org.uk\/about_cilex\/about-cilex-lawyers\/cilex-practitioners-directory\" target=\"_blank\">CILEx<\/a><\/em>\u00a0website. Incidentally, the title &#8220;legal executive&#8221; can be misleading. Check whether they are actually\u00a0chartered or not.<\/p>\n<p>A paralegal has some legal training but is not a solicitor or chartered legal executive. Find a paralegal on the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ppr.org.uk\/consumers\/find-a-paralegal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professional Paralegal Register<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>You say go to a solicitor, but they cost\u00a0too much<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Not always! Family\u00a0solicitors usually offer initially free advice, fixed fees, payment plans or pay as you go. See the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/how-we-charge\" target=\"_blank\">How we charge<\/a><\/em> page on our website. Compare these to the charges for online divorce\u00a0\u2013 you might be pleasantly surprised. You will have the assistance of a properly qualified and experienced solicitor with personal knowledge of your case. And if your solicitor is local, you can actually meet her.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why should I\u00a0consult a solicitor?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A divorce doesn&#8217;t sort out the finances or the children. These\u00a0are separate.<\/li>\n<li>Things can get complicated &#8211; hidden assets, the risk of child abduction<\/li>\n<li>A family\u00a0solicitor\u00a0will drop everything to protect you and your children<\/li>\n<li>Decisions about property, pensions etc will\u00a0affect the rest of your life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Can I talk to a proper solicitor please?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, of course.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-family-law.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Joanne Houston<\/em><\/a> at Just Family Law would be delighted to help you.
